The Big Book of Bling by Rose Davidson

If it grabs your eye, if it sparkles, twinkles or shines anywhere in the universe, you might find it discussed in this book.  This is a trivia book, full of color and glitz; but it does not provide much depth in any one subject.  Rather, it is designed to intrigue and possibly to lead young minds down other paths of discovery. 

In an age when the eye is pulled quickly from one subject to another through electronic means, a print version must be eye-catching and appealing.  I think that is what the authors intended for this work. 

The reader will find a great many fascinating subjects from rocks, history, science, splurges, to lights and beyond. Young readers will enjoy looking at the pictures, and more advanced readers will find fascinating tidbits to share with their friends.  I recommend it for elementary and middle school libraries. /:c

Her Own Two Feet by Meredith Davis and Rebekah Uwitonze

The subtitle of this book really tells most of the story of the book.  It is an inspiring story of a brave little girl who at nine, with the help of her sponsors, came half way around the world by herself in order to have the chance to walk on her own two feet.  Rebekah had been born with twisted arms and legs and her parents were urged by others in her home in Rwanda to abandon her by the side of the road and let her die.  But her parents refused to do that.  Instead, they encouraged her to do everything that she possibly could do and then go beyond that.

  Doctors in Rwanda tried to straighten her legs once when she was about four, but it didn’t work.  Rebekah could not walk to school, so her younger sister taught her everything she was learning each evening when she came home.  Rebekah taught herself to walk, instead of crawling around on the ground.  However, she had to walk on the tops of her feet since her feet were twisted all the way to the back.  Nevertheless, she persisted, and although she never could get her arms to work correctly, she learned how to eat and brush her teeth.  One day she found out that a person from America had sponsored her, providing her family with a guarantee of food and a chance for her to go to school.  This is itself encouraged her to keep up working toward her goal of walking and going to school. 

She did not know that her sponsor was a doctor in America.  One day another family who had sponsored children from her village came to visit them.  Mr. Clay Davis saw her need and realized that he knew her sponsor and that her sponsor, Dr. Rice, might be able to find another doctor who could help Rebekah walk.  Thus began the saga of Rebekah’s struggle to be able to walk.  Her father and mother knew that she had lived for a reason, and so they were able to let their little girl go to a strange land with people they did not know to find the help they could not give. 

The author of the book is Mrs. Clay Davis. Meredith and Clay Davis not only helped Rebekah come to the U.S. They provided a home for her and treated her as their own daughter through the years that she had to undergo treatments and surgeries. She tells Rebekah’s story from her firsthand knowledge and uses Rebekah’s words to explain all of Rebekah’s emotional turmoil.

I think this book deserves a place in every library.  It is a testimony to the power of faith and perseverance.  While the people involved in the story are obviously Christian, the story is not overtly about their faith.  It shines through, though, because faith is like that.  When it exists, people notice, even if editors may have pruned out overt religious references. Buy this for your upper elementary and middle school children – even if it is only for the cultural references which abound in the book.

The publisher of this series is Amicus Publishing.  I am not familiar with this publisher, but I am impressed by the quality of these books

Each of the books in the series is designed to appeal to the natural curiosity children have about their bodies. Each focuses on helping children learn to take care of themselves.

Each subject discussed in a particular book is set up in a two page spread, with one page of print material and one page with a picture.  Sometimes healthy hints are given to augment the material.  Unfamiliar or more difficult words are bolded and are listed in a glossary at the end of the book.

Each book has a “Get Started” page before the glossary to help the reader begin to do the things suggested in it.  The glossary is followed by a bibliography of books and web pages the student can use to gain further information about the subject discussed.

The publishers have included in the front of each book a list of the Common Core Standards supported in that book. The books are very colorful and have a good binding. While the books are written on a first grade reading level, they will appeal to students up to the fourth grade. I recommend this series for elementary libraries that are seeking to provide good non-fiction to their students.

National Geographic Kids Everything Series

I was only given two books in the series to review: Everything Mythology and Everything Dinosaurs. However there are others titles available: Everything Ancient Egypt, Everything Big Cats, Everything Sharks, Everything Castles, Everything Rocks and Minerals, Everything Dolphins and Everything Weather.

While Blake Hoena is the main author of the series, he works with National Geographic experts and/or authors to create the series. These books are colorful, full of information and well-bound.  Each book is packed with beautiful photographs and drawings. Each has a very good index, a list of videos, movies, books and other places where the reader may want to look at to learn more. Along with those learning aides is an interactive glossary (a type of quiz that allows the reader to check what he/she knows about the unusual terms used in the book).

Each book, or course, is only an introduction, but the author has taken great pains to pique the interest of the reader into learning more. I like the flaps both in the front and in the back of the paperback books.  They allow the reader to hold their place when interrupted, or when checking out something in the back of the book.  These flaps appear to be sturdy enough to take many readers handling them.

The books are also available in reinforced library binding. I did note that the word “reinforced” was misspelled in each book as “reinfored.” I did not notice misspellings in the texts, but I may just not have been aware that they were misspelled. It does bother me though, that something that obvious had slipped though the editing process. Still, this series definitely has a place in elementary libraries and public libraries. Those of you purchasing for Christian school libraries need to know that they take a secular view in the content, but you might use them for discussions of the differences of opinion.

Into the Unknown by Stewart Ross

I love to read historical books, both fiction and non fiction. This one is a delightful work of non-fiction designed for the elementary reader, but greatly appreciated by this adult. It is also a Boston-Globe-Horn Book Honor winner. This book first came out in 2011 as a hardback, but has recently been released as a paperback. Ross has given the reader a glimpse into the sort of lives that early explorers lived as they made discoveries that would change the world.

Ross introduces some explorers and explorations that I did not know about, such as Pytheas the Greek and the Treasure Fleet of Emporer Zheng He of China. Every chapter, even those about well-known explorers, has something in it that is not well-known.  These details make the book all the more fascinating.

For example, until I read this book, I did not know that the Chinese built their fleet inland and floated them out to the sea in man-made canals. I had never heard of Pytheas the Greek and his exploration of the North Atlantic. I also learned that the father and son team of Auguste and Jacques Piccard both soared into the stratosphere in a hydrogen balloon and descended into the deepest part of the Mariana Trench in a bathyscaphe (a feat the has never, yet, been repeated).

The illustrator, Steven Biesty, did an amazing job with the illustrations. Although all illustrations are drawings, they are so detailed that they come alive on the page. I was fascinated about how the explorers could tell by using the sun whether they were traveling north or south and how Viking knar boats were built so that they could twist in a storm. Biesty’s illustrations allowed me to visualize what they had seen.

The chapters are arranged in chronological order, which makes it easy for readers to find information about a particular time period. Ross also includes an excellent index, a glossary for unfamiliar terms, a list of sources and acknowledgement of direct use of information. These items make the book a good source for teaching research to young students.

Each chapter has at least one foldout page. This makes the book more interesting, but it could be a deal-breaker for those libraries with a small budget. (I would most certainly enforce the foldouts with hinge tape before allowing it to circulate.) However, the low cost of the paperback version at $9.99 is almost unbelievable for today’s market and would allow for replacement.

If at all possible, this book should be added to your collection. I do not often highly recommend books, especially paperbacks; but I highly recommend this book for elementary and middle school readers.

The Maps — Series by Jennifer Besel

Titles in this series: All book have a word count of about 150 words. All are supposed to be for Grade One.

What is a Map?

Symbols and Keys.

These books are designed to help develop critical thinking as required by the Common Core. They all contain excellent, colorful pictures and drawings. There is a glossary in each book, but the glossaries do not contain a pronunciation guide. Five new words or phrases pertaining to maps are introduced in each book. Each has a bibliography for further reading and two internet sites students can go to for games and more information. One site is a search site developed for children, and the other is a catalog of other Capstone books.  The students using the Capstone site are able to go to educational games on http://www.facthound.com.  Each book is library bound making it a good choice for school and public libraries.

While these books are written on a first grade level, I definitely have questions concerning the use of three and four syllable words in them. I do not believe that most first graders will be able to read them. They might best be used as a read-aloud to students, and then the teacher can further explain the concepts.

Also, each book contains only 24 pages; therefore, it does not fit the standard for picture books, and also makes the books rather expensive for libraries with limited budgets. Still, the material is clear, concise, and very well presented.  It definitely has a place in elementary libraries and public libraries.  I feel I can recommend it for elementary student probably those in second or third grade, though.
